Under this restructure it is proposed that from Mid-2021 our production of the Honda Civic in the UK at Swindon and in Turkey will cease.
From then, the next generation 2021 Civic model will be supplied from elsewhere in Honda’s global production network. The Jazz, HR-V and CR-V are not affected as they are currently produced in Japan.
Whilst this proposal has a high potential impact on the Honda Associates in Swindon, it is important to Honda that this decision is seen from a worldwide global prospective.
Katsushi Inoue, chief officer for European Regional Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd., and president, Honda Motor Europe, said; “In light of the unprecedented changes that are affecting our industry, it is vital that we accelerate our electrification strategy and restructure our global operations accordingly. “
As a result, Inoue said: “We have had to take this difficult decision to consult our workforce on how we might prepare our manufacturing network for the future.”
He added: “This has not been taken lightly and we deeply regret how unsettling today’s announcement will be for our people.”
Honda sold 5.2 million cars in 2018. Swindon produces 180,000 cars a year, which is around 3% of global production.
Additionally, the group sold last year nearly 20 million motorcycles and 6.2 million power products. (lawnmowers, ATV’s and boat engines).
Honda is one of the largest conglomerates in the World, and its revenue was nearly 122 Billion US dollars.
The global automotive world is rapidly changing and customer expectations are rising.
Honda is therefore actively responding to these challenges and to also ensure that it achieves its stated electrification target of 2/3 of our sales by 2025”.
