Mayor of London Confirms ULEZ Expansion and Widens Scrappage Scheme

Londoners Get £2,000 Grants to Switch to Cleaner Vehicles as ULEZ Expands

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has confirmed that the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will be expanded to cover all of Greater London from August 29, 2023. This means that all vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standards will be required to pay a daily charge to drive in the zone.

In addition to the expansion of the ULEZ, the Mayor has also announced that the scrappage scheme will be widened to make it easier for Londoners to switch to cleaner vehicles. Under the new scheme, all Londoners with non-compliant vehicles will be eligible for a £2,000 grant to help them buy a new car or van that meets the ULEZ standards.

The expansion of the ULEZ and the widening of the scrappage scheme are part of the Mayor's plans to improve air quality in London.

The £2,000 grant will make it more affordable for Londoners to switch to cleaner vehicles, which aims to help improve air quality even further.

The expansion of the ULEZ and the widening of the scrappage scheme are both positive steps towards improving air quality in London. These measures will help to protect the health of all Londoners, and they will also help to make the capital a more sustainable city.

What you need to know.

What is ULEZ?

The ULEZ is a low-emissions zone in London that charges vehicles that do not meet certain emissions standards to drive within its boundaries. The ULEZ was first introduced in April 2019, and it initially covered the central London area. However, the ULEZ is being expanded to cover all of Greater London from August 29, 2023.

The ULEZ charges £12.50 per day for cars, vans, motorcycles, and heavy goods vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standards. There are some exemptions to the ULEZ charge, such as for vehicles that are used for emergency services, taxis, and buses.

What is the London scrappage scheme?

The scrappage scheme is a government-funded scheme that provides grants to help people scrap their old, polluting vehicles and buy new, cleaner vehicles. The scrappage scheme is being widened to make it easier for Londoners to switch to cleaner vehicles in response to the expansion of the ULEZ. Anyone living in one of the 32 London boroughs or the City of London with an eligible vehicle will be able to apply to scrap a car or motorcycle.

  • Any Londoner living within the extended ULEZ zone can scrap a non-compliant car for £2,000
  • Grants for scrapping non-compliant vans and minibuses will increase by £2,000
  • Grants for scrapping non-compliant wheelchair accessible vehicles will increase from £5,000 to £10,000
  • Consumers will be able to use the grant as cash, meaning they can purchase their next vehicle from any retailer or private seller.

How do I apply for the London scrappage scheme grant?

  • Consumers apply for the grant online through the Transport for London website - The information on starting your application is towards the bottom of the page.
